Mind Set Engage is delivering a Movember funded programme called Ahead of the Game that has been tailored for young rugby players in Aotearoa.

The free workshops aim to educate players, parents/caregivers and coaches to recognise and talk about mental health challenges, what to do and where to get help.

Ahead of the Game involves:

  • A free one-hour mental wellbeing workshop for school rugby teams aged 14+ delivered by a team of experienced facilitators.
  • A separate workshop for caregivers and coaches.
  • Providing schools with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to make mental wellbeing a priority and ensure that everyone feels supported both on and off the field.

How it Works

Players

Throughout the workshop, young players will learn the skills to stay mentally fit.
They’ll learn how to kick off conversations about mental health and recognise warning signs of mental health struggles. They’ll also learn the skills to help a mate out who might be going through a tough time and where to seek support.

Parents & Caregivers

Ahead of the Game helps parents understand, recognise and manage mental health challenges within their family, including how to start a conversation when they think something is wrong. Throughout the workshop, parents gain important skills and knowledge that underpin the mental health of the people in their life.
The session will help them recognise the warning signs of mental health challenges, how to check in and gain an understanding of the support channels available.

Coaches

Ahead of the Game helps coaches understand, recognise and manage mental health challenges among their players.
Throughout the workshop, coaches will gain important skills and knowledge that underpin youth mental health.
This session will help them recognise the warning signs of mental health challenges among young players and how to start a conversation about mental health with players or parents.
They will also have a deeper understanding of the support channels available to them.
